Cornus controversa is a tree growing at high altitudes of about 500-1,400 m and is found in the center ofHalla Mountain. It has tiered horizontal branch structures and white flowers that bloom layer on layer everysummer. It looks like a multi-layered white wedding cake, therefore, commonly called ‘wedding caketree’. Most parts of this tree are edible and have been used as traditional medicines. The sap is availablein April and it is known for the treatment of arthritis and neuralgia. Barks of root and stem are harvestedduring the spring and autumn by drying under the sun. In traditional medicine, the infusion has been usedfor stroke and furuncle. The fresh fruits are also edible and the color is dark red when they are ripened.
The major anthocyanins, delphinidin 3-O-glucoside, delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside and cyaniding 3-O-glucoside,were isolated in a methanol extract of C. controversa fruit. Its anthocyanin contents showed higher levels thancommon consumable fruits, such as Montmorency, a tart cherry. Among these major anthocyanins, delphini-din 3-O-glucoside and delphinidin 3-O-rutinoside can be considered as marker compounds to identify C.controversa fruit. Along with anthocyanins, various phenolic compounds and terpenoids were reported.Additionally, many phenolic compounds from the leaves and stem bark of C. controversa were investigated.
